Cryogenic Treatment in Peterborough: Why Local Drop Off Changes the Maths

Most of our customers post parts to us. If you are in Peterborough or anywhere nearby, you do not have to, and that changes what makes sense to treat. This post is for engine builders, machine shops and racers in and around the city who want to know how local drop off works and why it opens up jobs that would not stack up by courier.

Where we are and how to find us

Cryogenix is at Unit 2 Slater Court, Harrier Way, on the Enterprise Business Park in Yaxley. That is the south side of Peterborough, a couple of minutes from the A1(M) at Norman Cross and the A15. If you are coming from Stamford, Huntingdon, Whittlesey or Market Deeping it is a straightforward drive. The what3words reference on our contact page will take you to the door.

Drop off and collection are always welcome. There is no booking system. Call ahead so we know you are coming and someone will be there to take the parts off you and note down what they are.

Why drop off suits bulky and heavy parts

Courier pricing punishes weight and awkward shapes. A bare engine block, a cylinder head, a pallet of guillotine blades or a set of commercial vehicle brake discs can cost more to ship both ways than it costs us to treat them. For a Peterborough customer that cost disappears.

It also removes the packaging risk. A crankshaft rolled in cardboard usually travels fine, but a block with machined faces or a head with valve seats is a different matter. When you hand it to us in person, you know how it was handled and so do we.

Peterborough has a lot of metal that could last longer

The city has built engines, machinery and tooling for the best part of a century, and the industrial estates around Fengate, Orton Southgate and Eastern Industry are still full of machine shops, fabricators and repairers. Cutting tools, press tooling, saw blades, dies and wear parts in those businesses are consumables that get replaced on a schedule.

Deep cryogenic treatment does not change the shape or finish of those items. It changes the metal all the way through, so a treated end mill or blade holds its edge longer and survives every regrind with the benefit intact. For a local shop that can drop a box of tooling with us once a month, it is one of the cheapest ways to cut consumable spend that we know of.

Racing and track day cars in the area

We are within easy reach of Snetterton, Cadwell Park and Silverstone, and there are plenty of people in and around Peterborough who race, rally or do track days. Brake discs are the usual starting point. Treated discs typically last two to four times longer and resist cracking and warping under repeated heat cycles.

Once people have seen that, they tend to send the drivetrain next: cranks, cams, rods, pistons, liners, gearbox internals. Local customers can drop a box of engine parts with us on the way home and collect after the next run, without ever packing a parcel.

Timing a local drop off

We run a full process roughly every four weeks and the cycle itself takes three days. The next date is always on our website. If you are local, the ideal is to drop parts off in the few days before a run and collect them the week after. If you are rebuilding an engine, treat the components after final machining and before assembly, and plan the drop off into the build schedule so you are not waiting on us.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drop off parts at Cryogenix without an appointment?

Yes, but please phone ahead on 01296 433457 so we know to expect you and can be sure someone is on hand to receive the parts.

How far is Cryogenix from Peterborough city centre?

Yaxley is about five miles south of the city centre, just off the A15 and close to the A1(M) junction at Norman Cross.

Is it cheaper to drop off than to post?

The treatment price is the same either way. Dropping off saves the courier cost in both directions and the packaging, which matters most for heavy or awkward items.

Do you treat parts for local businesses as well as individuals?

Yes. Machine shops, fabricators, engine builders and food and packaging manufacturers in the area send tooling and wear parts regularly.

Cryogenix Ltd runs deep cryogenic treatment from Yaxley in Peterborough and takes parts from across the UK by post or in person. If you are in Peterborough, bring the parts over and see the process for yourself. Call 01296 433457 or email info@cryogenix-uk.com and we will tell you what it would cost and when the next run is.
