Each month we search for an interesting article to give an insight into the various applications for Deep Cryogenic Treatment from across the world.

Below is this month's article...

Effect of cryogenic treatment time on mechanical

properties of permanent magnets

Magnets are notorious for their brittleness which restricts their use in many applications. Positive heat treatment would strengthen these parts but at the loss of their magnetic properties. With Cryogenic treatment however you seem to be able to have your cake and eat it. See the in-depth study in the research paper below;

"The flexural strength has experienced a remarkable surge of 13.6% along the weakest orientation, with this enhancement predominantly arising from the mitigation of residual stress. Furthermore, the anisotropy of thermal expansion has been significantly reduced by 18.2%, and this decrease aligns closely with the diminishing lattice constants. This study provides an effective and convenient approach to enhance the mechanical properties in Sm2Co17 permanent magnets without sacrifice of magnetic properties."
